What Is Orthopedic Massage?

Orthopedic massage focuses on the tissues and muscles surrounding the joints of the body. While it aims to alleviate the source of bodily pain and tension, orthopedic massage also works to restore balance to these physical structures.

Soft-tissue pain and injury is what first brings most clients in — post-surgical pain, an acute injury, or overuse strain from a repetitive motion like cycling, skiing, or hiking. Whatever the cause of the muscle damage, the intent of orthopedic massage is to lengthen and soften the muscles, tendons, and fascia, permitting better range of motion of the affected joints.

The Techniques George Integrates

George tailors each session to your body and your stage of activity — never a one-size-fits-all protocol.

Injury Assessment

A thorough health history is taken. Then passive, active, and active-resistive techniques are used to pinpoint injured soft-tissue structures. Range of motion (ROM) and flexibility are evaluated, and palpation of the soft tissue assesses its quality as well as any sensitive points or areas.

Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT)

A neuromuscular therapist is skilled in muscle anatomy, connective-tissue work, trigger-point therapy, and manual therapy. The goal of neuromuscular therapy is to reduce pain, discomfort, and stress in the body using precise manual techniques that keep the muscles relaxed and lengthened.

Myofascial Release (MFR)

Myofascial Release is a safe and effective hands-on technique that applies gentle, sustained pressure into myofascial connective-tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion.

Lymphatic Drainage Therapy (LDT)

Lymphatic drainage massage, also known as manual lymphatic drainage, relieves swelling that happens when illness or medical treatment blocks your lymphatic system. It gently manipulates specific areas of the body to help lymph move toward an area with working lymph vessels.

Sports Massage

In George's experience, Sports Massage is not a technique unto itself — it's the proper integration of a variety of soft-tissue techniques geared to the stage of activity you're in: pre-event, inter-event, post-event, maintenance, or injury recovery, whether during competition, in training, at an event, or in the office.

Therapeutic Stretching

Using the stretching techniques most beneficial to the condition being addressed — Active Isolated (AI) Stretching, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) Stretching, or static stretching — applied when and where necessary.

Therapeutic Exercise

Exercises to support and enhance the healing process following a manual-therapy session.
